Recent work with Jefferson and Turner suggests that the intersection form on the "vertical" part of middle cohomology of a singular elliptic Calabi-Yau fourfold is independent of resolution.  This provides a succinct and unified approach to understanding chiral matter and flux breaking of gauge symmetry in 4D F-theory geometries.  This talk describes further developments using this approach to provide new Standard Model constructions in F-theory and an improved understanding of the middle cohomology lattice on CY fourfolds from mirror symmetry.
